Facebook resizes and compresses almost everything you upload, and getting your source dimensions right before uploading is the only reliable way to avoid unwanted cropping or visible compression artifacts. Here’s the full breakdown.
Cover photo
The Facebook Page cover photo displays at 820 × 312 px on desktop, but it’s cropped differently on mobile, so keep essential text or logos within the centered 640 × 312 px “safe zone” to make sure nothing important gets cut off on smaller screens.
Profile picture
Upload at least 720 × 720 px. Like most platforms, Facebook displays this in a circle, so keep your subject centered with breathing room around the edges.
Shared post images
- Single image post: 1200 × 630 px (1.91:1) is the standard recommended size and also doubles as the correct size for link preview thumbnails
- Square post: 1200 × 1200 px
Facebook Stories
Same as Instagram Stories: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16), since both platforms share the same underlying format.
Facebook ads
Ad specifications vary by placement, but 1080 × 1080 px (square) is the safest universal choice since it displays acceptably across feed, marketplace, and most other placements without awkward cropping. If you’re running a dedicated Stories ad, use the 1080 × 1920 vertical format instead.
The 1200 × 630 size deserves special attention
This dimension matters even if you’re not posting an image directly — it’s also the size Facebook uses to generate the preview thumbnail when someone shares a link to your website. If your site’s “og:image” is a different aspect ratio, Facebook will crop it unpredictably. Setting a properly-sized 1200 × 630 image as your page’s social preview image avoids this entirely.
Getting the exact size without guesswork
Rather than eyeballing crops in a photo editor, resize your source image to these exact pixel dimensions before uploading. Our free resizer includes a Facebook cover-photo preset, so you can go from your original photo to a properly-sized cover image in a couple of clicks.
