If you’ve ever transferred photos from an iPhone to a Windows computer, an old Android device, or certain websites and gotten a file that won’t open, there’s a good chance it’s saved in Apple’s HEIC format rather than the more universal JPG.
What HEIC actually is
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones running iOS 11 and later. It compresses photos to roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPG at similar visual quality, which is why Apple made it the default — it saves a meaningful amount of storage space, especially with modern high-megapixel phone cameras.
Why it causes compatibility problems
HEIC is a relatively newer format, and not every operating system, website, or piece of software has built-in support for it. Recent versions of Windows and macOS can usually open HEIC files natively, but many web forms, older editing programs, and some online services still only accept JPG or PNG uploads, leading to the frustrating “this file type isn’t supported” message.
The simplest fix: convert to JPG
Converting a HEIC file to JPG solves compatibility issues instantly, since virtually every device, browser, and platform accepts JPG without question. The conversion does involve JPG’s lossy compression, but at high quality settings the visual difference is negligible for most everyday viewing.
