Inconsistent or incorrectly-sized product photos make a store look unprofessional and can even trigger listing rejections on stricter marketplaces like Amazon. Here’s what each major platform actually requires.
Shopify
Shopify recommends 2048 × 2048 pixels for product photos, in a square (1:1) aspect ratio for the most consistent grid display across themes. Shopify supports images up to 20 MB, but there’s rarely a reason to upload anywhere near that size — a well-compressed JPG or WebP at the recommended dimensions typically lands well under 1 MB.
Etsy
Etsy recommends a minimum of 2000 pixels on the shortest side, with a square (1:1) crop displaying best in search results and shop grids. Etsy explicitly favors well-lit, high-resolution photos in its search ranking, since image quality is one of the signals used to rank listings.
Amazon
Amazon requires product images to be at least 1000 × 1000 pixels on the main listing image specifically so the platform’s zoom feature works — images below this threshold won’t be zoomable, which measurably hurts conversion rates. Amazon also requires the main image to have a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), a stricter rule than most other marketplaces.
The universal safe choice
If you’re selling across multiple platforms and want one master size that works everywhere, 2000 × 2000 pixels, square, JPG format satisfies the minimums for all three platforms above and can be downscaled per-platform if a specific listing needs something smaller.
Common mistakes that hurt conversions
- Uploading a rectangular photo and letting the platform auto-crop it, resulting in cut-off products
- Using different aspect ratios across a product’s photo set, creating a messy, inconsistent gallery
- Uploading a phone photo without resizing, resulting in unnecessarily large files that slow the listing page down
- Ignoring background requirements on platforms like Amazon that reject or bury non-compliant listings
A consistent workflow for a whole catalog
If you’re preparing a full catalog rather than a single photo, resize every image to the same square dimensions in one batch rather than individually to guarantee visual consistency across your store. Our batch resizing tool handles an entire folder of product shots at once, which is especially useful when relaunching a store or migrating between platforms with different size requirements.
