X (formerly known as Twitter) has specific image dimensions for profile photos, header banners, and post images, and using the wrong size often results in unwanted cropping in the feed.

Profile picture

Recommended size: 400 × 400 pixels, displayed in a circle in most placements. Keep the subject centered to avoid corner cropping.

Header (banner) image

Recommended size: 1500 × 500 pixels (3:1 ratio). This wide banner sits at the top of your profile page above your profile picture and bio.

In-feed post images

  • Single image: 1200 × 675 pixels (16:9) displays without cropping in most feed views
  • Square image: 1200 × 1200 pixels also displays well and is a safe choice if you’re not sure which ratio fits your content best

Note that when posting multiple images in one post, X applies its own grid layout and crop, so individual image aspect ratio matters less than when posting a single image.

Link preview cards

When you share a link, X generates a preview card using your website’s configured social image, typically displayed around 1200 × 630 pixels — the same dimension used by most other major platforms for link previews, which is convenient if you’re setting up one image to cover multiple platforms at once.

Why feed images sometimes look cropped

X’s feed preview crops images to fit a consistent preview height, which can cut off the top or bottom of an image with an unusual aspect ratio. Sticking to the 16:9 or 1:1 recommended ratios above avoids most unexpected cropping in the timeline view.

To hit these exact pixel dimensions before posting, resize your image to the target size rather than relying on X’s automatic crop to guess the right framing.
